How to back up and restore your solve history

Cubeathon guide · Reviewed October 2026

Cubeathon saves every solve in your browser the moment you stop the timer. That makes it fast and private, but a browser's storage can be cleared. A backup file, or a free account that syncs, protects your history.

This guide covers exporting a backup, restoring it, and how account sync fits in.

Where your solves live

  • Without an account: on this device, in this browser only. Another browser or phone starts empty.
  • With an account: each solve is saved on the device first, then uploaded to your account, so it appears on your other devices. If you're offline it uploads later.

Either way, you can export everything to a file at any time.

Export a backup

  1. Open Settings → Your data → Export. (The timer's drawer has the same button on its Data tab, under “Backup & import”.)
  2. A file named like cubeathon-solves-2026-10-05.json downloads, holding every session for every puzzle.
  3. Keep it somewhere outside the browser: a cloud drive, email to yourself, or a USB stick.

Exporting works with or without an account.

Restore a backup

  1. On the device you want the solves on, open Settings → Your data → Import (or the timer's Data tab → Import).
  2. Choose your backup file. The page reloads and tells you how many solves were imported.

Restoring merges by solve: nothing already on the device is overwritten, and solves that are already there aren't added twice. Sessions in the file appear in each puzzle's session menu.

Restored solves count as imported

Anything that arrives from a file, even a Cubeathon backup, is marked Imported. It stays in your history with its scramble, penalty and date, but it doesn't set PBs or averages on that device, and it can't be shared as a result. To move to a new device with your PBs and averages intact, sign in there instead: synced solves keep their status.

Sync with an account

A free account is optional. Once you're signed in, new solves upload in the background and appear wherever you sign in. An account is also what lets you share results. The timer itself never needs one.

Sync isn't a substitute for an occasional export: a backup file is a copy you control, outside any service.

Clearing local data

Settings → Your data → Clear local datadeletes every solve stored on this device, after a confirmation. Solves already synced to your account are untouched. Export first if this device holds solves you haven't backed up or synced.

A simple backup routine

  • Export after any session you'd hate to lose: a new PB, or a long practice block.
  • Export before clearing your browser's data, switching browser, or resetting a phone.
  • Coming from csTimer? Import your csTimer history, then export once so everything is in one file.
