How to challenge someone with the same scramble

Cubeathon guide · Reviewed October 2026

Two cubers can only really compare times on the same scramble. In Cubeathon you share a solve, the other person taps Solve this scramble, and the timer opens with your exact scramble. Their first attempt appears next to your time, and they can send their result back as a side-by-side card.

The person you challenge doesn't need an account to solve it.

Why the same scramble

Some scrambles are much easier than others: a cross that's already half built, or a lucky last layer. Two random scrambles can hide a gap of several seconds. On the same scramble, the difference is the solvers, which is what a challenge should measure.

1. Send your scramble

Share a single solve or your PB: tap the solve in the timer's Solves list, press Share, and send the link, image or QR code. The shared solve carries its exact scramble. Sharing needs a free account; see how to share a solve for the details.

2. They solve it

Your friend opens the link and sees your result. Under it is Solve this scramble. Tapping it opens the timer on the right puzzle with your scramble ready, so they scramble their cube and solve as usual. No sign-up, and the solve is saved on their device like any other.

3. Compare first attempts

After their firstattempt, the result screen shows both times side by side with the difference. Only the first attempt counts: it's the only one made without knowing the scramble.

  • Both sides use the real result: a +2 adds two seconds, a DNF stays a DNF.
  • Times are compared as they're displayed, to the hundredth.
  • Cubeathon shows the comparison but doesn't declare a winner; the numbers speak for themselves.

4. Share your attempt back

Under the comparison is Share your attempt. It makes a new share showing both names and times on the same scramble, marked “First recorded attempt” when it was.

Sharing needs an account. If your friend isn't signed in, Cubeathon remembers the attempt and offers it again after they create an account and the solve has synced, so the first attempt isn't lost. If you later take down your original link, their side-by-side page says your result is no longer shared.

Challenge with a whole Ao5

One solve can be luck; five is a real test. On the Compete page, share Ao5 scrambles to send the five scrambles behind your best Ao5.

What your friend does

  1. They tap Solve these 5 scrambles on your shared page.
  2. The timer serves your five scrambles in order, one per solve. Refreshing the page picks up at the right scramble.
  3. After the fifth solve they see their Ao5 next to yours. Your times stay hidden until they finish, so they can't pace themselves against you.

Everything needed travels with the tap, so the round works without an account and keeps working if the connection drops. The Ao5 is worked out the WCA way; see how Ao5 is calculated.

Keep it fair

  • Use the same rules on both sides. Turning on WCA inspection (15 seconds, then +2, then DNF) in Settings keeps it close to a competition.
  • Apply the scramble carefully, holding white on top and green in front. A wrong scramble makes the comparison meaningless.
  • Don't look at the scramble before you're ready: the first attempt is the one that counts.
