How the Cubeathon timer works

A free online Rubik's Cube timer that follows WCA competition rules. It runs in your browser on any phone, tablet or computer, needs no account, and keeps working offline once loaded.

  1. Read the scramble

Hold the cube with white on top and green in front, then apply the scramble from left to right. Tap the cube preview to replay it move by move if something doesn't match.

  2. Inspect

With WCA inspection on, you get 15 seconds to look at the cube before solving, exactly like a competition.

  3. Hold, then release

Hold the spacebar (or press and hold the timer on a phone) until it shows ready, then let go. Timing starts on release.

  4. Stop

Press any key or tap the screen the moment the cube is solved.

  5. Review

Mark a +2 or DNF, add a note, and watch your averages update after every solve.

Need a scramble to practise with away from the timer? Try the 3×3 scramble generator.

Can't solve the cube yet? The free beginner course teaches the whole solve step by step, with every algorithm played on a 3D cube — then come back here and time it.

WCA inspection, +2 and DNF

Inspection gives you 15 seconds to study the cube before the solve. The timer applies the WCA penalties for you:

0–15 s
No penalty
15–17 s
+2 seconds added to the solve
17 s or more
DNF (did not finish)

You can also mark a +2 or DNF yourself afterwards, for example when the cube was one move from solved. The competition prep guide explains how rounds and penalties work at a real WCA competition.

Averages: Ao5, Ao12 and Ao100

Cubers judge their speed by averages, not single solves. Cubeathon calculates them the WCA way:

  • Ao5 — your last five solves, with the best and worst dropped and the middle three averaged. This is the format of most WCA events.
  • Ao12 — your last twelve, best and worst dropped.
  • Ao100 — your last hundred, with the five best and five worst dropped.

A DNF counts as your worst solve, so one DNF can be dropped, but two DNFs in an Ao5 make the whole average a DNF. Best averages, mean, standard deviation and personal bests are tracked too.

Every WCA puzzle, each with its own sessions

Switch puzzle from the bar above the scramble. Each puzzle keeps its own sessions, statistics and personal bests.

Your solves stay on your device

Every solve is saved in your browser the moment you stop the timer. There is no solve limit and no paywall. You can export a backup at any time, import solves from another timer, install Cubeathon to your home screen so it opens full-screen and works offline, and sign in only if you want your solves synced across devices.
